Physical Education

Ms. Shannon Little

We anticipate an exciting year of Physical Education at Oxford Valley Elementary School. I am looking forward to introducing your child to a world of physical activity.

The Council of Physical Education for Children (COPEC) believes that quality physical education should be available to all children. Quality P.E. is both developmentally and instructionally suitable for the specific children being taught.

The general goals and objectives of Oxford Valley’s developmentally appropriate physical education program are outlined below:
  • To help children become more self-directed, self-reliant and fully functioning individuals.
  • To provide a curriculum that includes a balance of skills designed to enhance the cognitive, motor, affective and physical fitness development of every child.
  • To allow children the opportunity to work together to improve their social and cooperative skills.
  • To design classes that meet a child’s need for active participation in ALL learning experiences.
  • To give children the opportunity to practice skills at high rates of success adjusted for their individual skill levels.
  • To integrate cross-curriculum subject (reading, writing, technology, etc.) into the P.E. program in order to enhance the overall development of the child.
Students attend physical education class once in a five day cycle. Class periods range from 30 minutes (kindergarten) to 40 (first/second) and 45 minutes (third, fourth, fifth) in length. Lessons are divided into 5 parts:
  • Warm-up (Physical Fitness)
  • Skill introduction
  • Skill practice (partner/group)
  • Skill application (activity or game)
  • Cool-down and Closure (review)
Physical Education Attire:
  • Sneakers with ties or velcro straps are required for physical activity by Pennsbury School District in order to ensure a safe environment.
  • Dress in comfortable clothes (no dresses or shirts) for active participation. Dressing in layers (tee shirt, shorts or sweat pants, sweat shirt) is highly recommended.
Medical Excuses:
  • Parental excuses must be written to the Physical Education teacher. Your child should present this note to the P.E. teacher before class begins.
  • Excuses for more than one week require a doctor’s written statement.
  • If your child’s activity should be restricted or limited in any way, please contact the nurse’s office immediately.
  • Students in grades one through five will receive a P.E. grade twice a year.
  • To encourage self-responsibility, students will be asked to take an active role in their individual grade. Students will be able to earn a maximum of five (5) points per class based on the following criteria:
    • proper attire (esp. sneakers)
    • cooperation
    • effort
    • sportsmanship
    • skill progress
